(July 9, 2007 – Weirs, NH) The
Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society welcomes Dr. Alan
Fraser Houston who will present “A New Hampshire
Family in the Civil War” on Wednesday, July 25 at
7:00pm at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum, Route 3, Weirs,
NH. Admission is free.
The subject matter focuses on the 14th Regiment of NH
Volunteers, based on the 1864 diary of Sandwich, New Hampshire’s
Corporal Lewis Quimby Smith and his family’s correspondence.
The program will share some of the struggles of the entire
family, both on the battlefield and on the farm, providing
the history of a soldier, his company and regiment, as
well as his family, town and state.
Dr. Houston partnered with the Sandwich Historical Society
to publish his new book on this subject entitled “Keep
Up Good Courage” and will be available for book signing
that evening. Light refreshments will be served after the
presentation.
Houston graduated from Amherst College and Boston University
School of Medicine. He served in the United States Navy
as a flight surgeon from 1970 to 1972. He and his family
settled in Sandwich, NH, near the family homestead, where
they lived for over two decades before moving to Durango,
Colorado. Dr. Houston is the author of a variety of historical
articles and maintains a lecture schedule throughout the
