(June 6, 2007 – Weirs, NH) The
Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society welcomes John Bridges
on June 27th who will present a program on “The Islands
of Winnipesaukee” at 1:00 p.m. at the Lake Winnipesaukee
Museum, Route 3, Weirs, NH. Admission is free.
John Bridges, a Concord, NH native, has many stories to
tell about the lake he grew up on and the islands that
especially attract him. Bridges spent his summers on the
lake as his father, former NH Governor & U.S. Senator
Styles Bridges, had a cottage in Wolfeboro. At the age
of 11, John began working at Goodhue Hawkins Navy Yard,
and was first a deckhand on The Swallow, originally a steam
yacht that arrived on the lake in 1897, and later earned
his captain’s license on this same boat. He is presently
chairman of the NH Water Council and owns Island Real Estate
Company in Wolfeboro.
As part of the presentation, Mr. Bridges will provide
a “show and tell” of personal memorabilia from
years on the lake. Light refreshments will be served after
the program.
Winnipesaukee Wednesdays is a free lecture program sponsored
by the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society. The next
program will be held on Wednesday, July 25 at 7:00 p.m.,
entitled “A New Hampshire Family in the Civil War,” presented
by Dr. Alan Houston. The subject matter focuses on the
14th Regiment of NH Volunteers based on the correspondence
of Cpl. Lewis Q. Smith of Sandwich. For a complete list
