ALTON & ALTON BAY

Return to Alton

Return to Main History

From "Where To In The Lakes Region Of New Hampshire", 1947.

The live village of Alton, situated at the gateway of Lake Winnipesaukee and the foothills of the White Mountains, is one of the most picturesque villages in all the Lakes Region.

One mile north of Alton is Alton Bay, part of that same village. It is one of the most widely known summer vacation spots in New England. Here, one finds modern hotels and tourist homes, finely and well equipped with all modern conveniences. Here also will be found speed-boats, sea-planes, dancing, fishing, fine swimming and the call each day in the summer months of the new Motorship Mt. Washington II.

Some of the finest boys' and girls' camps are found in Alton. There are three churches for worship at Alton Village. Public grade and high schools are rated high by the state.
