CAMPS

Summer camps around Lake Winnipesaukee exploded in popularity following the 1881 opening of America's first sleepaway camp on nearby Squam Lake, Camp Chocorua. Early camps included Camp Idlewild (1891), Camp Belknap (1903), and Camp Winaukee (1920). They attracted youth from urban areas, drawing them to the lake's islands, bays, and forests for swimming, sailing, and character development. By the 1930s, the Lakes Region had up to 72 camps! Though many have closed; survivors like Camp Belknap and Winaukee preserve the traditions of independence, camaraderie, and outdoor adventure for today's generation of young campers.
