MOULTONBOROUGH

Moultonborough was chartered on November 17, 1763, by Governor Benning Wentworth and incorporated on November 27, 1777. It was named for Colonel Jonathan Moulton, a prominent Revolutionary War figure whose extended family from Hampton, NH were prominent among early Moultonborough settlers. Over time, the town shifted from farming and lumber to tourism, boosted by scenic attractions such as Castle in the Clouds, built in 1914, and the historic Old Country Store. Today, Moultonborough remains a quiet Lakes Region gem bursting with historic charm.
