The Underwater History of Lake Winnipesaukee Featuring Hans Hug Jr.
Hans returns and his presentation will include videos of wrecks while diving in the big lake and other interesting artifacts from below the surface of the lake. Hans has been an avid diver for many years and it will be of great interest to anyone who enjoys the history of Lake Winnipesaukee.

The Islands of Winnipesaukee Featuring Ron Guillmette and Jay Lecesse
Join author and photographer, Ron Guilmette with his newly released book, “The Islands of Winnipesaukee”. Listen to the paddling adventures of Jay and Ron as they paddled to all of the islands of Winnipesaukee. The “Islands of Winnipesaukee” is a 11"x 9.5” coffee table book with color photos of all 260 islands on Lake Winnipesaukee. Ron and Jay may have been able to solve the long unanswered question of “How many islands are there on Lake Winnipesaukee?” The book also contains many interesting stories about the island and “Fun Facts” about the lake and islands. It makes a great gift and is a must for every coffee table at the lake. The books will be available for purchase at this presentation!

Crosscut, the Mills, Logging and Life on the Androscoggin Featuring Rebecca Rule
Using oral histories, Rebecca Rule recreates the voices of North Country people and uses new and vintage photos to tell the story of logging, the Berlin Mills, and life in the Androscoggin Valley, from the beginnings of the logging industry in the 1800’s through the boom years of the Brown Company and subsequent mill owners. New Hampshire Humanities Council presentation.

What made New Hampshire native Daniel Webster America’s greatest orator? The presentation will investigate the sources of Webster’s genius as a public speaker, and discuss the most eloquent examples of his rhetorical legacy.

Glenn Knoblock documents the oft-forgotten metal bridges, made of iron first, then steel, thatbegan to replace New Hampshire’s covered bridges beginning in the 1860’s. New Hampshire Humanities Council presentation.

Women Soldiers in the Civil War Featuring David Decker
David Decker, local Civil War historian will be presenting “Women Soldiers in the Civil War. In 1861 women had few opportunities for employment: nurse, teacher, or governess, but some women wanted to fight for their country. Between 250 and 1000 women disguised themselves as men and fought as soldiers during the American Civil War.

A Theater Near You Featuring Jeff Klenotic
When did movies first arrive in New Hampshire? Where did they play? Who presented them? Who saw them? This program explores these questions and more as Jeffrey Klenotic presents examples from his ongoing research, which aims to produce a digital archive and interactive map charting every venue where movies played in the Granite State from the medium’s origins in 1896 to the rise of television in the 1940’s.

Underwater History of Lake Winni Closes Out LWHS 2012 Season
Scuba diving enthusiast Hans Hug Jr. will share his latest underwater discoveries with attendees at the Lake Winni Museum's final presentation of the 2012 season. Hans Hug Jr., returns to the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Saturday, October 6th at 11am with his program “The Underwater History of Lake Winnipesaukee.” Using videos of wrecks that he encountered while diving in the big lake, Hug, Jr. will take you to interesting places below the surface. For those of you who attended one of Hans’ programs last year, you will be treated to some new features this time around. His presentation will include videos of wrecks and other interesting artifacts. The presentation is free. Refreshments will be served. This presentation is free and open to the public and is handicap accessible. The Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society Museum in located at 503 Endicott Street North, next to Funspot, in the Weirs. Baked Beans and Fried Clams: How Food Defines a Region
Yankee Magazine columnist Edie Clark will explore how food traditions develop and how they become part of the community and culture of a region. Johnny Cakes, Baked Beans, Yankee Pot Roast and Lobster Pie – all classic New England recipes. For many these traditional foods always remind us of “home.” New Hampshire writer and long time Yankee Magazine columnist, Edie Clark, will present her entertaining program “Baked Beans and Fried Clams: How Food Defines a Region” on Saturday, September 29th at 11am at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in The Weirs. The Mount Washington and The Uncle Sam Mail Boat
David Warren will have tales and film on the SS Mount Washington and the Uncle Sam
David Warren of Melvin Village, NH, stands behind his scale model of the old Lake Winnipesaukee Mail Boat the Uncle Sam which was in operation until 1962, Working from old photos and the vivid memory of former Uncle Sam Captain, Vernon Cotton, the completed model, which took three years to complete, is on display at The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Rte 3 in the Weirs.

Native American Archaeology Program At Lake Winnipesaukee Museum
The Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society welcomes David Stewart-Smith to the museum on Saturday, August 25th, for a presentation entitled, Native New Hampshire Before Contact: Archaeological and Tribal Perspectives. David Stewart-Smith began researching the New Hampshire Indian archaeology and history some 30 years ago. In the 1990’s he studied with Howard Sargent, who was directly involved in the 1976 archaeological investigation undertaken at Weirs Beach. The presentation will begin at 11am. The Museum is located on Route 3, between Meredith and Weirs Beach next to Funspot). Admission is free and donations are always greatly appreciated. Jack Irwin At Lake Winnipesaukee Museum
Jack Irwin, whose father, Jim Irwin Sr., operated the Winnipesaukee Gardens in the Weirs, will be the guest speaker at the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society’s Saturday Summer Program on Saturday, August 18th at 11am. Jack will talk about the early days of Weirs Beach including the 1924 fire that destroyed the New Weirs Hotel, one of the states grand hotels; the Weirs Music Hall and the Winnipesaukee Gardens, where many big bands were featured from the 1930s to 1970s. This program is free and open to the public. The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is located on Rte 3 in the Weirs between Meredith and Weirs Beach next to Funspot. For more info call 366-5950.

Water Ski Clubs & Races
Did you belong to a water ski club or did you race in the 50’s and 60’s? Join us at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum for tales of victories and defeats. Bring your scrapbooks and any memorabilia you can share. A short film of the 1959 New England Water Ski Championship Tournament held at Lake Opechee will be played. Admission is free (donations appreciated). Refreshments will be served.

This program starts at 11am in the museum’s air-conditioned, newly renovated barn. The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is located on Rte 3 between Meredith and Weirs Beach next to Funspot.

Castle In The Clouds
Michael Desplaines, Executive Director of Castle in the Clouds will give a PowerPoint presentation on the ongoing restoration work at the castle. The Lucknow estate was completed in 1914 by Thomas Plant, a self-made millionaire who built it as his retirement home. Join us for this fascinating presentation in the museum's newly renovated, air-conditioned barn. Admission is free and donations are appreciated. Refreshments available.

History of Gunstock
Award-winning author and historian, Carol Lee Anderson, will give a presentation on the history of Gunstock on Saturday, July 14th, at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum beginning at 11am. The presentation will tell the story of the development of winter sports and skiing in the Lakes Region, from before the construction of Gunstock through the present-day efforts to preserve the resort’s rich history. Included will be stories of skiing greats Torger Tokle and Penny Pitou, as well as coaches Gary Allen and Bill Trudgeon. Anderson’s book, The History of Gunstock: Skiing in the Belkanp Mountains, won the 2011 Skade Award from the International Skiing History Association. She will have copies of her book available for purchase after the presentation. The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum is located on Rte. 3 between Merdith and Weirs Beach, next to Funspot.
