Scuba diving enthusiast Hans Hug Jr. will share his latest underwater discoveries with attendees at the Lake Winni Museum's final presentation of the 2012 season. Hans Hug Jr., returns to the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Saturday, October 6th at 11am with his program “The Underwater History of Lake Winnipesaukee.” Using videos of wrecks that he encountered while diving in the big lake, Hug, Jr. will take you to interesting places below the surface. For those of you who attended one of Hans’ programs last year, you will be treated to some new features this time around. His presentation will include videos of wrecks and other interesting artifacts. The presentation is free. Refreshments will be served. Yankee Magazine columnist Edie Clark will explore how food traditions develop and how they become part of the community and culture of a region. Johnny Cakes, Baked Beans, Yankee Pot Roast and Lobster Pie – all classic New England recipes. For many these traditional foods always remind us of “home.” New Hampshire writer and long time Yankee Magazine columnist, Edie Clark, will present her entertaining program “Baked Beans and Fried Clams: How Food Defines a Region” on Saturday, September 29th at 11am at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum in The Weirs. David Warren will have tales and film on the SS Mount Washington and the Uncle Sam
David Warren of Melvin Village, NH, stands behind his scale model of the old Lake Winnipesaukee Mail Boat the Uncle Sam which was in operation until 1962, Working from old photos and the vivid memory of former Uncle Sam Captain, Vernon Cotton, the completed model, which took three years to complete, is on display at The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum on Rte 3 in the Weirs.

The Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society welcomes David Stewart-Smith to the museum on Saturday, August 25th, for a presentation entitled, Native New Hampshire Before Contact: Archaeological and Tribal Perspectives. David Stewart-Smith began researching the New Hampshire Indian archaeology and history some 30 years ago. In the 1990’s he studied with Howard Sargent, who was directly involved in the 1976 archaeological investigation undertaken at Weirs Beach. The presentation will begin at 11am. Jack Irwin, whose father, Jim Irwin Sr., operated the Winnipesaukee Gardens in the Weirs, will be the guest speaker at the Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society’s Saturday Summer Program on Saturday, August 18th at 11am. Jack will talk about the early days of Weirs Beach including the 1924 fire that destroyed the New Weirs Hotel, one of the states grand hotels; the Weirs Music Hall and the Winnipesaukee Gardens, where many big bands were featured from the 1930s to 1970s. Did you belong to a water ski club or did you race in the 50’s and 60’s? Join us at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum for tales of victories and defeats. Bring your scrapbooks and any memorabilia you can share. A short film of the 1959 New England Water Ski Championship Tournament held at Lake Opechee will be played. Admission is free (donations appreciated). Refreshments will be served.

Michael Desplaines, Executive Director of Castle in the Clouds will give a PowerPoint presentation on the ongoing restoration work at the castle. The Lucknow estate was completed in 1914 by Thomas Plant, a self-made millionaire who built it as his retirement home. Join us for this fascinating presentation in the museum's newly renovated, air-conditioned barn. Admission is free and donations are appreciated. Refreshments available.

Award-winning author and historian, Carol Lee Anderson, will give a presentation on the history of Gunstock on Saturday, July 14th, at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum beginning at 11am. The presentation will tell the story of the development of winter sports and skiing in the Lakes Region, from before the construction of Gunstock through the present-day efforts to preserve the resort’s rich history. Included will be stories of skiing greats Torger Tokle and Penny Pitou, as well as coaches Gary Allen and Bill Trudgeon. Anderson’s book, The History of Gunstock: Skiing in the Belkanp Mountains, won the 2011 Skade Award from the International Skiing History Association.
